Zanzibar is world-famous for its rich selection of spices, herbs, and fruits. The spice trade dates back to the 16th century, and at one point the island was the biggest producer of spices in the world. Experience this integral part of Zanzibarian culture! Our guide will tell you how the various spices are cultivated and explain to you their effects on our bodies. On top of that, you will be able to smell and taste fresh tropical fruits and spices like cinnamon, clove, coconut or mango. And at the end of the tour, you can chose two spice packages for free!

Ever heard of Chipsi mayai or Ndizi na nyama? No? Then it's time to get to know these tasty traditional Swahili/Tanzanian dishes. Influenced by Arab, Portuguese and Indian kitchen, Swahili food is usually mixed with a variety of spices like coriander, chilli or cloves. In this tour you will learn how to cook basic Swahili dishes, presented and explained by local people that love to share their customs. Afterwards you are invited to eat these delicious meals together. We recommend to combine this tour with our Spice Farm tour (see combined tours)!

No visit of Stone Town is complete without doing a guided city tour. The beautiful UNESCO world heritage city is home of many magnificent buildings and other sights, which reflect a period of over 1000 years of colonisation. Elements of Arab, Indian, African and European create a unique and fascinating townscape, which is still intact today. Our guides will show you the most prominent sights of Stone Town and some hidden treasures, while giving you detailed information to the history of these fascinating places.

If you want to get in close contact to nature, this tour to Zanzibar's only national park might be just right for you. Founded in 2004, Jozani Forest serves as a natural reservoir for some rare and endangered species of plants and animals. Especially the popular "Red Colobus Monkey" is a big attraction for tourists, and since they are not very shy, you will most likely get to see many of them. Your tour guide will be happy to explain you all about these and other fascinating animals while you walk through the wild mangrove forests.

What's included?

  • Taxi transport from Stone Town (meeting point at Forodhani Garden, from there it's a 40 minutes drive)

  • Entrance fees (some of the entrance fees go to local communities)

  • 2 hour guided walking tour through Jozani Forest, where you can see animals like  Red Colobus monkeys, Sykes monkeys, chameleons, bush pigs, antelopes and numerous birds and butterflies.
